The Hilltop Retreat
Designer, Nathan Kyle is at it again! This time around, there was something different about the home. The client, an artist who is full of creativity was seeking a modern space for their new home up in the Gatineau hills. It was all about the view. Once you arrive at this home, right away you are swept away by the unbelievable view of the Gatineau Hills, the Gatineau River and the skyline of downtown Ottawa in one shot. Understanding that this home was all about the scenic view, the home was designed around just that.
Nathan Kyle came in to help with mainly their Kitchen & 3 Bathroom designs. The homeowners wanted modern spaces throughout the home, to not take away from their spectacular view.
This home was built for a couple who wanted an environment conducive to entertaining large groups of family and friends, so a large, functional kitchen with good flow was key. “In addressing the functionality, I wanted to create a space that looked aesthetically balanced with functional and decorative elements,” says Nathan Kyle.
The central feature in the kitchen is the island, with the beautiful butcher block. The island counters have silver wave granite surrounding the prep area mixed with walnut butcher block for the eating area. The inclusion of two materials was necessary to create the length that was required without having a seam in the countertop, and created a length that was ideal for entertaining. The butcher block also allows for a warmer touch on the area where people can rest elbows, versus a cold surface.
“Using a two-toned kitchen allows for the back wall, which is utilitarian in nature, to stand on its own and juxtapose itself with a more detailed decorative island,” Kyle says.
The Guest Room
This room was inspired by an open-concept hotel room, with a zen-like feel to it for their guests to escape and relax.
The Guest Bathroom
Keeping with the white and modern style spaces, this bathroom was designed for ultimate functionality, yet remaining aesthetically pleasing. The curbless shower allows for the room to appear larger, and the bathtub is found inside the shower space, creating a spa-inspired wet room. The tall cabinetry creates the maximum storage available.
The Master Bath
Now, THIS is a Master Ensuite. The Victoria & Albert freestanding tub is centred in the middle of the room and faces the beautiful view of the hills. It is the perfect after-work escape. The his & her shower is also a unique part of this room, creating a sense of romance and relaxation all in one space. The cabinets on the floor alongside the windows are also a neat feature thought through by Nathan. This space truly expresses relaxation at its best. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a nice bath with a view like that?!
Overall, the rooms were designed with the homeowner’s lifestyle in mind and the key to it all was ensuring their view was the main focus. Throughout the home, you can see all the ways that their personality is shown. With modern taste, and pops of her favourite colour red, this home is truly one-of-a kind! See the complete gallery.
