The Existing Kitchen

Designer, Dean Large originally met his clients as they came in to the Astro showroom looking to change and update their bathroom.  They were ready for a fresh start and to take on the challenge of remodeling. as oppose to moving out of their secluded home in the woods.  Once the bathroom was complete, it was time to tackle the kitchen.  This kitchen was not necessarily old or worn out, rather a lot more traditional than what the client's taste preference was. Dean's task was to convert this traditional kitchen into a contemporary space that flowed with the rest of the home, yet keeping elements of warmth from the outdoors.

10 Countertop Mashups for the Kitchen

Posted by Houzz Editorial on Feb 23, 2015 9:58:38 AM

"Mixing matrials for kitchen countertops has many benefits. For one, you can save money by using a less expensive material for your perimeter countertops while splurging on something more luxurious for an island top. Plus, mixing materials is a great way to add visual interest to your kitchen and avoid the overabundance of one color or material. With that in mind, designers are pairing marble with walnut, granite with reclaimed wood, engineered quartz with maple butcher block and more to create diverse surfaces for working, eating and gathering."

"A downsizing retired couple realized their lifelong dream of living on the water with this home on the picturesque Rideau River near Ottawa, Ontario. And they wanted the decor in their new home to complement the views they loved so much outside. Kitchen Of The Week

Posted by Guest Blogger on Dec 2, 2014 1:56:42 PM

Kitchen of the Week: Hardworking Island in a Timeless Space

"The Kitchen in this 1940s Ottawa cottage was big enough for only one person to use and not suitable for the family now living there. “Before, this kitchen was about the size of a bathroom and was lackluster,” says interior designer Nathan Kyle of Astro Design Centre. Kyle began the design process by learning how the family likes to function in the kitchen when working together, then set up the layout accordingly. He took down a wall and incorporated into the kitchen a side entry hallway that had been a waste of space. He also added luxe elements that suit the family’s love of eclectic and contemporary style. Rich wood finishes and a lively backsplash provide a beautiful backdrop for a display of intricate pieces they brought to Canada from Iran and create a timeless look." - Becky Harris, Houzz
