Farmhouse Designs

Kitchen and Bath Designer, Dean Large of Astro Design Centre, has completed top-to-bottom designs in this new Farmhouse outside of Ottawa. His designs have won awards at the NBKA Design Excellence Gala, and have been featured in Ottawa at Home Magazine for its unique charm. Below is a recap highlighting Dean’s kitchen and bath designs in this new home

The Kitchen

A traditional farmhouse with modern practicality was the inspiration for this kitchen. The kitchen is centered around a large working island with commercial calibre appliances on its surrounding. This kitchen needed to service the active family of 6, which meant that everything needed to be supersized. Discreetly disguised in paneling is a 36” full fridge and 36” full freezer. In the wet area of the kitchen is a commercial inspired stainless steel take on the classic farmhouse sink.

While this kitchen is primarily on function, the aesthetic of the kitchen hasn’t been forgotten. The cabinetry is done in a black walnut with a Nubian stain and the milk coloured lacquer. This high contrast is softened with the rustic charm of reclaimed pine flooring which for over a century sat at the bottom of the Ottawa River. The sense of heritage is reiterated with the rustic timbers repurposed from the properties original barn where the new home currently stands. These warm wood elements and pure painted surfaces are juxtaposed beautifully with the impressive slab of Calacatta marble which is the heart of the kitchen. This splash of elegance is both stunning and highly practical for long days spent rolling out pastry.

Finishing details in the kitchen help bring everything together. We wanted make every detail as beautiful as possible as well as functional. The hardware in the kitchen is all cast white bronze with a natural patina adding to the substance and integrity of the space. The herringbone mosaic backsplash is a nod to an era gone. All of this lends to creating a space which feels of quality and authenticity, a space to live in.

The Mudroom

Creating a mudroom which would be large enough to house all the people at once was the challenge. I chose to split the space into two key areas. One is the area where everyone can house their coats and boots. The other is to be able to house all the extra day to day stuff and cleaning products needed to run an active house hold. Given that this family loves their pets it was only natural that we incorporate a dog shower into the space, a veritable puppy spa.

The materials used for the space are classic in their tone and application but far from boring. A black and white mosaic floor offers a stunning graphic pattern which hides a multitude of sins from daily traffic. Classic white subway tiles used on the wall space are both beautiful and functional offering a durable surface to work against.

The mudroom features a large banquet seat with storage and a butcher block top. Many say that the kitchen is the heart of the home. However, in this home it might have one more… the mudroom.

The Powder Room

Often the powder room is the forgotten room of the house. As small bathroom that goes unnoticed. In this instance we wanted to do just the opposite. We decided to pay homage the century styled home and all the classic details accompanied with it. While the room small housing only a sink and toilet, the message it makes is anything but.

A classic black and white mosaic floor tile is continued in from the adjacent room into the powder room. Inspired by their daughters’ love of reading I chose a whimsical wallpaper to cover every wall in the room. Vintage Penguin book covers off all the classics reissued in repetition create a stunning and colourful effect.  The industrial-influenced Hudson Valley light fixture adds a touch of vintage-modern to the space. (Fixtures, Console & Lighting supplied through Astro Design Centre).

After visiting this home one is surely going to leave never able to forget this powder room.
